013.1 - Buntspecht
Pontresina (Switzerland), 20254th Price
The sloping terrain, the towering larches, and the view of Piz Bernina define the site, where a residential building of eight apartments is envisioned for Pontresinas Pilotprojekt 2401 competition. Just as the woodpecker (Buntspecht) moves with effortless grace among the treetops, inhabiting them and making them its own, the new building gently embraces the existing trees. In this way, a softly meandering form takes shape, winding around the larches and ascending the hillside like a whispered gesture of the landscape itself.
The bedrooms are conceived as elemented, load-bearing timber boxes, arranged intimately around the trees. Their projections and recesses, together with the inset balconies, sculpt the spatial rhythm and articulate the living areas beyond. Some of the bedrooms can be seamlessly opened into the living spaces through strategically positioned doors, allowing them to become part of the whole. This flexibility ensures that each apartment can respond gracefully to the shifting rhythms of daily life, adapting with ease to the needs of its inhabitants.
