025 - Revitalization of a soccer pitch

Matadi (Democratic Republic of Congo), 2024

ongoing project
Like a meadow the soccer pitch Terrain de Damar lies nestled in the dense urban fabric of northern Matadi. Its sheer size makes it a spatial anomaly in this tightly built area of the city. Currently, the field is a sand pitch lacking adequate changing rooms and sanitary facilities. The existing stands consist mostly of three concrete steps.
A lightweight wooden structure, constructed with simple screw connections, extends the existing concrete base upward, providing protection from sun and rain for spectators on the stands. Additionally, rammed-earth construction is used to create changing rooms and sanitary facilities, seamlessly integrated into the expanded design of the stands.
