104 - Komorebi

Zürich - Moritzberg (Switzerland), 2024

open competition
Komorebi is a Japanese word that encapsulates the phenomenon of sunlight streaming through the leaves of trees, creating a gentle interplay of light and shadow on the ground. More than a visual delight, it evokes a profound sense of serenity and a deep connection to nature, inspired by this dance of light.
This guided our approach for this new school building near Zurich. The park-like landscape surrounding the building reaches into the classrooms through open façades and deep balcony planters. The ever-changing shadow play of leaves is envisioned as a constant, calming companion to the students in their everyday school life.
The floor plan is shaped by the arrangement of four classrooms aligned along the façade, creating an intimate central core. This core, serving as a contrast to the outward-facing classrooms, provides access to the three levels and functions as the hub for central interaction and exchange.
